ADB Problems - Is the cable important?

Hi all,

I have a Nexus 6P which i have rooted but is still on the stock ROM. I have managed over the last few months to flash new ROMs when security patches are updated, using my laptop.

Today when I attached the Nexus to my laptop, everything looked right. The 6P is in the devices list, the driver is as per the google download (uninstalled and re-installed just to check) and the phone is picked up by the laptop.

However in the command window, "fastboot devices" returns nothing, and "fastboot reboot" tells me it's waiting for a device to connect. USB debugging is activated etc on the phone.

The only thing I can imagine which is different is that I couldn't find the short USB-A to USB-C cable that came with the phone, and so used a TechNet one I bought from Amazon for my car. But seeing as I can access the internal storage and transfer files etc, I don't think that the cable is the problem?

So does it matter that the cable isn't official? I know sometimes with my iPod I get different results depending on which cable I use (some charge only, some allow syncing) but I assumed this was down to Apple moving pins around on the cables, whereas the USB-C cable should be standard?

Thanks all!
