Accessing files from external hard drive without copying to device.

I'm thinking about picking up a Google Pixel C to fully jump on board with the google ecosystem. One function that is very important for me is ability to access files off of an external hard drive/flash drive without actually having to move those files onto the device. E.g. watch a movie directly off an external HD without having the put the movie file on the device. Is this possible with the Pixel C? Thanks!
