Turbo League

Oh man, mad props to Vality9 in the comments for recommending Turbo League — easily the best Rocket League clone for Android. If you've never played Rocket League before, basically all you need to know is that it's rocket-powered cars playing soccer.

This is a game that I would only recommend if you've got a BlueTooth controller handy. The touch controls are quite tricky, but connecting a BlueTooth controller like the SteelSeries Stratus XL really makes up for Turbo League's shortcomings.

Because there are shortcomings. While this game features both the smoothest gameplay and best graphics of any "rocket car soccer" games I've tried out for Android, the physics are a little off and you don't have as much control over your car while in the air. Nevertheless, you do have option to play solo or online in 3 vs 3 matches. And it's free which is pretty amazing — though that also means there are in-app purchases for reloading your rocket fuel, or you can watch a video add for one rocket charge.

Is this as good as Rocket League? No. Is it the next best thing that you can play on your phone? Absolutely!

Critical Ops

There's a number of great first-person shooters for Android, and I'm always surprised to find another great game that somehow eluded me.

Spencer Schenk was so hyped on this game he commented about it twice. And yeah, it's a pretty great shooter that owes a lot to CS:GO, allowing for 8 vs 8 matches between terrorists and counter-terrorists, Critical Ops offers a fairly pure online shooter experience with quality graphics. There are 19 weapons available and two modes of play: Team deathmatch and bomb defusing.

According to the Google Play app description, this game is still in Alpha — but it plays like a fully-developed game. So either the description hasn't been updated in a while or the game developers are still working on improving things. They also say that the game is not and will never be pay-to-win, which is great because that's a common complaint for a lot of games these days.

Oceanhorn

In his recommendation for Oceanhorn, J Washburn described it as a "good Zelda game". Once you've played it for a little while, you understand just how apt that description is. While it's in no way connected to that beloved Nintendo franchise, it offers a very similar tone and gameplay style.

The game opens with your father writing a letter to your before his mysterious disappearance. This sets you off on an adventure to explore the Uncharted Seas, battling monsters and solving puzzles as you go.

The full title here is Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas, and you can try it for free before unlocking the full game via a $5.99 in-app purchase. Once you've experienced the outstanding 3D graphics, the fantastic music (composed by some of the best in the biz), and become invested in the compelling storyline, it's easy to justify that purchase. There's also support for Bluetooth controllers which makes gameplay that much smoother.
