Finger print security no longer works on Nexus 5X

Since updating software to 7.1.2, I cannot use my finger print. Message is "Finger print hardware not available". Under security it still shows the "Nexus Imprint option and still has my original finger recording. I tried adding a further finger print, but the process does not quite complete and has the message "Enrollment was not completed. Fingerprint enrolment didn't work, Try again or use a different finger". I have tried several times with different fingers, same fault keeps comming ip.
